John Syer

1815 – 1885

Syer was a landscape painter and the father of John Syer Junior.

He studied with J. Fisher, the miniaturist of Bristol. His paintings were mainly landscapes and coastal scenes painted in Devon and Wales. He became an Associate of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours in 1874 and a full member in 1875 and a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1883

He exhibited 1846 to 1875 at the Royal Academy in London.

Paintings by him have been exhibited at Bristol, Leeds, Leicester and Sheffield.
