Zacharie Noterman

He was born in 1820 at Ghent and died in 1890 at Paris.

Noterman specialised in painting genre scenes and animals, and these he usually did in oils.

He was the brother of the renowned painter Emmanual Noterman and spent the early years of his career in Antwerp before moving to Paris, where he settled for the rest of his life.

As well as being known for painting mostly scenes of dogs and monkeys, he was also known for his depiction of circus acts. Typical titles of his work include “Young Dogs watching a mouse” (oil on panel), “Monkeys in a Tavern” (oil on panel) and “Bagpipes Player” (oil on panel).
