Maurice Blum (1832-1909)

Blum was born on the 2nd of April 1832 in Lyons and died in 1909.
He was a painter in oils and watercolours and was also an engraver.
Maurice Blum is widely regarded as one of the finest French figurative painters of the nineteenth century. He specialized in military subjects, portraits, military portraits, genre scenes, circus scenes and interiors with figures.

Blum studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lyon where he spent four years (1846 – 1850).

He moved to Paris where he was a pupil of Delacroix, Picot and Stevens.
He first exhibited at the Lyon Salon of 1858 with two portraits and the Marriage in Lyons of Henri IV and Maria di Medici.

He settled in Paris and from 1864 to 1891 exhibited portraits, interiors, earlier and modern genre subjects, and the circus scenes and military paintings in which he specialised.
