Gustave Mascart

1834-1914

Born on 8th March 1834 in Paris. Mascart was a French painter of landscapes and a student of the much-traveled naval painter Jean-Baptiste Henri Durand-Brager (1814-1879), who was best known in life for his marines with warships. He was a pupil of Potier and Durand-Brager and Exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1880.

Mascart focused on the realistic cityscape. Especially Paris and the periphery were discussed in his oeuvre. He can be considered one of the pioneers of what has come to be called “Montmartre painters”, with views of Montmartre , the Moulin Rouge , Place Pigalle , et cetera. Mascart also painted cityscapes in other places, including in: Amsterdam (The Montelbaanstoren ), Como , Ghent , Ostend and the windmills of Kinderdijk .

His works have been auctioned in Europe, the UK and the USA.
