Marie Dieterle

French 19/20th Century

Dieterle established herself as a popular female artist in an art world dominated by men. Her work showed an affinity with the Barbizon School and an interest in increasing the popularity of the depiction of animals, inspired by the work of her father Emil, who was a porcelain painter at the Sevres Factory, and under the tutelage of Constant Troyon.

Her maiden name was Van Marcke de Lummen and she was born on the 15th of April 1856 in Sevres and she died in 1935 in Paris. She married and settled in Normandy- making her name primarily as a painter of animals.

She exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon of French Artists from 1874 to 1934 and gained an honourable mention in 1833 and a medal in 1834. At the “Exposition Universelles” of 1889 and 1900 she received medals.

Marie Dieterle was made a member of the Societe des Artistes Francais in Paris in 1890, and was created a Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur in 1930.

In 1999 she featured in the retrospective entitled ‘The Dieterles, a Family of Artists’, at the Terre-Neuvas, Fecamp.

Her work is exhibited at the galleries in La Rochelle, Mulhouse, Pont-Audemier and Rouen.
