1846 – 1927

Our painting of the week is by Ernst Koerner, signed and dated 1899. It is of the River Nile at Geza, Eygpt. It is one of his most famous works and can also be found at www.facebook.com/EgyptOldCairoPaintings  . Koerner was born in Stibbe 1846 and attended a Berlin high school. In 1861 he studied at the studio of Hermann Eschke to which he owes his principal training. Later, he also worked with Karl Steffeck and Gottlieb Biermann. Then he made study trips to the coasts of the North and Baltic Seas, in the Harz Mountains, in the north of France (1868), in Italy, in England and Scotland (1872) and with greater success in Egypt, Syria, Palestine and Turkey. 1878, 1886 and 1905 he was again in Egypt, in 1882 in Spain. In 1894 he became a professor in Berlin and in the year’s 1895 to 1899 chairman of the club artists. Koerner also produced religious pictures, like the altar of the Church of the Redeemer in Berlin-Rummelsburg.

He received a medal in Vienna in 1873, Philadelphia 1887, Berlin in 1887, the Melbourne medal in 1888 and the gold medal in Berlin in 1891. He currently has pieces in Birmingham, Hamburg and Kalingrad museums.

Ernst Koerner had a daughter and three sons, died in Berlin1927 & buried in the municipal cemetery Luis in Berlin-Kreuzberg.
