History:

This basic scotia frame, varied by the addition or subtraction of decorative elements, was one of two main styles used by Turner throughout his career.  It is a version of the late 18th century NeoClassical or ‘Morland’ frame, so-called because it is frequently found on paintings by the artist George Morland. The deep hollow or scotia is a device for focusing attention upon the image and enhancing its perspective, whilst also helping to reflect light onto the surface of the painting. Regency deep scotia frame with corner leaves optional fluting and an egg and dart sight,
