This is an example of a ‘Khatam’ frame. ‘Khatam’ means ‘inlaid’. It is the Persian / Iranian art of decorating wooden surfaces with smaller painted pieces. It is traditionally inlayed with patterns made with thin wood sticks, brass and camel bone. It is believed that this art form began in China during the Mongol and Persian Safavid periods.
