Austin WINTERBOTTOM

1860-1919

This British artist was an oil painter and a watercolourist who painted landscapes and figure compositions.

Throughout his career he was based in Sheffield and drew much of his inspiration from its surrounding countryside- his work exuding a love of the English landscape and the people in it.

He is particularly known for his snow scenes (typical titles include “Drifted Snow” and “Frostbound”).

Winterbottom exhibited his work in the Royal Academy from 1889 and at the Royal Society of British Artists from 1890. A listed title in the Royal Society of British Artists is “Evening: Sketch near Sheffield”.

As well as being held in many private collections he also exhibited a painting in the Manchester City Art Gallery.
