Jules Gustave Leroy

Biography of Artist

He was a nineteenth century artist who lived from 1856 - 1921.
Born in France he was known for his studies of animals of which cats were his main focus.
Leroy is probably the son of another Jules Leroy (1833 - 1865) who, whilst painting fruits and flowers, also had a particular talent for painting cats and kittens.
It does not appear that in his time his talent was particularly recognised however in today’s market he is one of the most highly collected of all the cat painters and his auction records are continually rising.
