Biography of Artist

German School Circa 1880

There is little recorded information on this artist.

We believe that he was a French artist that probably travelled around Europe. This is not untypical of 19th Century painters, as all our data generally comes from records at exhibitions.

Many artists found that they could make a better income from private commissions rather than exhibiting and having to deal with the major galleries, i.e. Paris Salon / Royal Academy, where fees, organisation, advertising etc all came into a complicated equation. Working for single patrons gave the artist a freedom to express himself, and importantly, the freedom to travel. Many artists benefited greatly by having an Italian or French influence. There are artists who, whilst having little biographical history, are highly collected partly because of this influence.
