John Hamilton Glass

Biography of Artist

Exh.1890-1925

Born in Scotland, this accomplished artist built up a reputation for himself from an early age. Throughout his career Glass proved his versatility and was equally at home painting all subject matter. His first recorded exhibit was in Edinburgh in 1890. His style very much reflects the progressive and innovative movement of art occurring in Scotland at the end of the 19th century.

He is thought to be the son of John Glass who was also a very accomplished painter. Interestingly his work never reached any gallery further south than the Walker Art gallery, Liverpool; but his work was shown extensively in Scotland including:- 19 in the Royal Scottish Academy, 4 in the Royal Hibernian Academy, and 3 in the Glasgow Institute of Fine Art. We also find him exhibiting in 2 galleries in the North of Britain - namely Pencaitlandin in 1905 and Musselburgh in 1915.
